It's doubtful that low nutrient levels in the soil are causing the leaves to turn brown. When nutrients are low, the problems you will see can include yellowing of the leaves, decreased plant vigor and poor flowering and/or fruit set.
When leaves turn brown it can be for a number of reasons. One common problem is under watering. Check to soil to see if it is too wet or to dry. Make sure to dig down at least 6 to 10 inches to check the moisture. The soil can be perfect in the top inch or two and bone dry below that.
Other things than can cause the leaves to brown include diseases of the leaves or roots. The leaf disease part is obvious, but root diseases can cause brown leaves too. If the roots are sick or dead, they can't move enough water into the plant to supply its needs and the plant will exhibit drought symptoms.
