Will my poinsettia survive outdoors?

I'm in Zone 10, but am only here from Nov. 1st till end of Jan. I'd like to plant my Christmas poinsettia outdoors, but have done several times in the past and they have all died. Any advice on location and do they need a lot of care? Several of my neighbours have beautiful ones, but they are here all the time.
